For me it felt like I was watching a police chase on TV…
You know that one when the bad guys are so desperate to get away, taking so many risks….
But you and I both know that it is going to end in a fiery crash…
That’s what it was like for me with my friend Chris.
Every time I saw him he had gained weight despite trying to ‘eat healthy’.
He was always so optimistic about how he was going to ‘turn it all around’ with his new workout routine or diets...
Then in January, he told me that his family doctor gave him ‘a sample’ of pills and a blood sugar monitor to try to help get things back under control...
I was worried for Chris.
With all of my training, I knew he was at risk, but had it become that serious?
By the end of that month I knew something wasn’t right…
Chris wouldn’t make plans… he was avoiding my calls…
Then all of a sudden that fiery crash was our reality...
He finally called me…
On the verge of tears...
He was so nauseous from the pills the doctor gave him that he could barely eat anything…
He was so scared from the ‘extreme’ numbers on his blood sugar meter that he didn’t know what to do…
I knew he needed my help and that I needed to act quickly to get his blood sugar under control…
I was so scared because I could easily lose my friend….
With extremely high blood sugar, he was in serious danger of diabetic ketoacidosis, going into a diabetic coma and injuring his foot that would likely cost him his leg... and his independence....
